P.A.L. and Restricted P.A.L. Courses:

To be eligible to apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL), classroom participation in the full CFSC is mandatory for first-time licence applicants. A PAL or Restricted PAL (RPAL) licence is your authorization to possess/acquire firearms and obtain ammunition. Your licence must be kept current for as long as you possess firearms in Canada.

Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC):

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course is designed for non restricted rifles and shotguns. It consists of a full day of course work with an exam at the end. The exam contains a true/false and multiple choice test as well as a practical exam where you would demonstrate safe handling of several different firearms in different scenarios.

Topics covered in the CFSC include:

  • The evolution of firearms, major parts, types and actions
  • Basic firearms safety practices
  • Ammunition
  • Operating firearm actions
  • Safe handling and carry procedures
  • Firing techniques and procedures
  • Care of non-restricted firearms
  • Responsibilities of the firearms owner/user
  • Safe storage, display, transportation and handling of non-restricted firearms

Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC):

Individuals wishing to acquire restricted firearms must take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) prior to taking the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) and pass all exams.

Additional topics covered in the CRFSC include:

  • Firing techniques and procedures for handguns
  • Care of restricted firearms
  • Responsibilities of the firearms owner/user
  • Safe storage, display, transportation and handling of restricted firearms

The content of these courses is controlled and approved by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Canadian Firearms Program and was developed to meet mandatory requirements of the Firearms Act.
